Reedemotorschiff Grimmershörn RC model kit Manufacturer Krick Modellbau
History of the original:
The Reedemotorschiff Grimmershörn, built in 1956, was an integral part of everyday maritime life off Cuxhaven for many decades. The ship was built at the Hansa shipyard in Cologne-Deutz for the former Cuxhaven Waterways and Shipping Authority. It served as a versatile work and supply vessel in one of the most important areas of the German coast – the Elbe estuary and the German Bight.
From the outset, the Grimmershörn was designed for rough conditions. Its robust steel hull, spacious working deck, and functional equipment made it a real “workhorse” at sea. Its main area of operation was the so-called outer roadstead off Cuxhaven, a busy transition area between the Elbe and the North Sea, where numerous tasks had to be performed by such a ship.
A central field of operation was the supply and maintenance of light vessels – floating lighthouses that were still anchored far out at sea at that time. The Grimmershörn brought fuel, provisions, and water, exchanged crews, and thus ensured the continuous functioning of these important navigational aids. The laying out, checking, and maintenance of navigation marks, especially buoys, was also part of its daily routine. In addition, it was used for pilot transfers, i.e., for bringing sea pilots on board and disembarking them, who had to guide large ships safely through the narrow fairway of the Elbe.
Technically, the Grimmershörn was ideally equipped for these tasks. It had powerful engines, a bow design that was well suited to rough seas, and a deck layout that facilitated work with cranes and workboats. Although it was not a modern survey vessel in today's sense, it served as a reliable platform for nautical tasks at sea for decades.
After a long period of service, the ship was finally decommissioned. Unlike many other government vessels, however, it was not scrapped. Instead, it found a new owner who lovingly restored the Grimmershörn by hand. Great importance was attached to preserving the original character of the ship. Today, it has been preserved as a private traditional ship and can occasionally be seen at maritime events or in historic ports.
The history of the Grimmershörn from 1956 is exemplary of an entire generation of functional, seagoing workboats that were used in the North Sea and Baltic Sea in the post-war period. Its decades of service off Cuxhaven, its versatile use, and the fact that it still exists today make it a remarkable testimony to maritime engineering history.
Description of the kit:
Our model was designed according to shipyard plans on a scale of 1:20 and corresponds to the 1957 design. The modifications carried out later were deliberately not included. The model can carry a high payload and, thanks to its hull volume, is ideally suited for special functions.
The model kit contains finished ABS parts for the hull, deck, and bulwark, milled plywood parts for the superstructure, all fittings, shaft with stern tube, and rudder gear. A simple model stand is included. The assembly instructions are provided in German. Two large 1:1 plans and numerous additional drawings ensure that all parts can be easily identified.
The brass turned parts supplied for the ship's lighting are difficult to fit with light sources as they are mainly made of solid material. It would be advisable to replace the simple shaft system with a shaft with good bearings. The 3-blade plastic propeller can be replaced with a beautiful brass propeller.
