History of the original:

For its owner, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, a French oceanographer whose numerous inventions and technical underwater research are a significant factor in uncovering the secrets of the seas, the CALYPSO represents the fulfilment of a dream. In 1950, Cousteau bought an 8-year-old American-built minesweeper and, after extensive conversions and modifications, the CALYPSO was born - a fully equipped marine research vessel.
The CALYPSO made its maiden voyage to the Red Sea in 1951 and since then Cousteau, his son Philippe and a team of explorers have carried out extensive underwater research and scientific experiments in all parts of the world. Although Cousteau published several books about his research voyages, the CALYPSO is probably best known for the many television films made during its voyages.
The 42 metre long, 360 tonne ship has 2 x 600 hp diesel engines and reaches a maximum speed of 12 knots.
The CALYPSO has a large number of specialised equipment: an underwater observation chamber in the bow area, a unique saucer-shaped diving bell, a Galeazzi diving chamber, an inflatable boat for excursions in shallow waters, a helicopter and a large number of underwater devices.

The BILLING BOATS model was developed in co-operation with the Cousteau Society according to original plans.

Kit contents description:

This kit contains a moulded ABS hull. The superstructure is mainly built from plywood parts. Many of the wooden parts have been laser cut. Accessories such as submarine, helicopter and crane are also modelled and are included in the scope of delivery. These components are made from deep-drawn parts and injection moulding. The rudder, propeller shaft with stern tube and propeller are designed to be driven by an electric motor. All fitting parts are included in the scope of delivery with building plan and building instructions.

The kit is aimed at modellers who are already experts in ship modelling.

Paints, adhesives and tools are required and can be found in our range.

What do the building instructions look like?

The multilingual building instructions consist of very concise drawings without detailed explanations. Parts list and overview plans. Good technical imagination is required here.
