History of the original:
The commuter yachts, also known as pendulum yachts, from Sparkman & Stephens represent an era in which speed, elegance and comfort were combined in a sleek design. Sparkman & Stephens, founded in New York in 1929, made a name for itself worldwide as a design office for ocean-going and racing yachts, but also designed elegant motor yachts for everyday use. These commuter yachts were particularly popular in the 1930s and 1940s, as they allowed wealthy owners to travel quickly and stylishly between the city and their country estates.
A typical commuter yacht, around 66 feet (20.12 metres) in length, combined a sleek, streamlined hull with powerful engines, while also offering space for comfortable living areas and cabins. Sparkman & Stephens' designs were characterised by clean lines, high efficiency in the water and elegant proportions. They followed in the tradition of American speedboats, but retained the craftsmanship and sophistication of classic yacht designs.
The Dauntless was commissioned by a prominent New York family. Without a doubt, every trip on the Dauntless was a pleasure. The glory days of the Dauntless are over. Now you have the opportunity to bring this magnificent yacht back to life.
Kit contents description:
The Dauntless is made almost entirely of 3 mm plywood. It is a frame construction in which the hull is planked over a large area with plywood panels. All parts are cleanly punched out and require only minor reworking. The kit contains 38 metal fittings for detailing the model. The dimensions of the yacht allow for a wide range of propulsion methods. Various electric, glow or petrol engines can be used. Now it's up to you to make the final decision on the keel laying of the DAUNTLESS.
Who is the kit suitable for?
The kit is aimed at experienced model builders. The ability to add your own details to the large model and the wide range of propulsion options make it an attractive project.
What else is needed?
Paints, adhesives and tools are required and can be found in our range.
The propulsion can be provided by one or two shafts, and there is plenty of space – even for unusual engine variants.
What do the assembly instructions look like?
The concise assembly instructions consist of overview plans and explanatory drawings with American measurements. A German translation is included.
