Schaarhörn RC model ship kit from manufacturer Caldercraft
History of the original:
The Schaarhörn is a German steamship from the imperial era, which was launched in 1908 at the renowned Janssen & Schmilinsky shipyard in Hamburg. It was built on behalf of the city of Hamburg as a sounding steamer and was mainly used to survey the Elbe shipping channels and secure the shipping routes in the Port of Hamburg and the Elbe estuary.
The ship was 45 metres long, 7.10 metres wide and had a draught of about 3 metres. The Schaarhörn was powered by a steam engine with around 500 hp, which enabled it to reach a speed of about 12 knots. In addition to its technical role, the Schaarhörn was also a representative ship: Emperor Wilhelm II used it several times for trips, and its elegant lines and classic white paintwork made it a particularly handsome example of the steamships of that era.
After the First World War, the Schaarhörn continued to be used as a survey and escort ship, but was later decommissioned and even sold to Scotland in the 1970s. There it fell into disrepair until an initiative to rescue it was formed in the 1990s. With the support of the Hamburg Maritime Foundation, the Schaarhörn was extensively restored and brought back to Hamburg.
Today, the Schaarhörn (1908) is a fully restored, seaworthy steamship that sails on the Elbe on special occasions. It is considered one of the most beautiful preserved steamships in Germany and is an important floating cultural monument that impressively recalls the era of representative working ships around 1900.
Kit description:
The model of the Schaarhörn was recreated as faithfully as possible to the original based on plans and numerous photos. No expense was spared in the selection of materials for the model, just as with the original.
The finely detailed GRP hull features carefully reproduced rivets. The wooden parts for the superstructure are precision-made using CNC machines. Window frames, decorations on the bulwark and many other parts were made from brass sheet using an etching process. Over 850 fittings made from carefully cast white metal ensure that this model is absolutely true to scale, right down to every bulwark support with all its screw connections. The structures of the wooden deck and some decorations are already printed on the building material. Two shaft systems are included for the propulsion, including cast propellers and rudder system.
Who is this kit suitable for?
The construction of this model is intended for experienced model builders.
What else is needed?
Paints, adhesives and tools are required and can be found in our range.
It is possible to install a steam engine, but the narrow hull requires an additional keel, which is not included in the kit.
For an electric drive, two powerful 650 motors and two attractive 40 mm 3-blade brass propellers are recommended.
What do the building instructions look like?
The building instructions consist of text with photos and 3 large building plans. A German translation is included.
The instructions are not available for download.
