Grand Banks RC model motor yacht kit from manufacturer Amati
History of the original
Grand Banks motor yachts are among the best known and most respected classic motor yachts worldwide. For decades, they have been synonymous with traditional craftsmanship, timeless design and exceptional seaworthiness. The name Grand Banks is closely associated with the term ‘trawler yacht’ and has had a decisive influence on this type of yacht.
The history of Grand Banks began in the early 1960s. The company was founded by American Marine Ltd., initially with a shipyard in Hong Kong. The aim was to develop a new generation of motor yachts based on the design of the robust North American fishing boats – the so-called ‘trawlers’ – but combined with the comfort and amenities of a luxury yacht.
The first Grand Banks, the Grand Banks 36, was launched in 1963 and immediately set new standards. The solid mahogany hull, classic lines with a high bow and wide stern, and distinctive flybridge made it unmistakable. At the same time, its economical and reliable diesel engines offered enormous range and efficiency – characteristics that made it particularly popular for long voyages.
Over the years, Grand Banks became an icon among motor yachts. The name became synonymous with quality, safety and style. In the 1970s, the switch was made from traditional wood construction to fibreglass (GRP), which made the yachts more durable and easier to maintain. Classic models such as the Grand Banks 32, 42 and 49 Trawler became true bestsellers and can still be found sailing the world's oceans today.
A typical Grand Banks is characterised by its timeless silhouette, upright wheelhouse, wide side decks and practical interior layout with a spacious saloon, comfortable cabins and functional galley. The combination of traditional style and modern technology particularly appeals to owners who value reliability and comfort at sea.
With the change in boat usage and more modern requirements, Grand Banks developed new model series in the 1990s and 2000s, such as the Eastbay (a sportier line with more powerful engines) and later the Aleutian series, which was designed as larger, ocean-going motor yachts.
Today, Grand Banks Yachts Ltd. is an internationally recognised manufacturer based in Singapore that produces both classic and modern luxury yachts. The brand is known for its perfect balance of tradition and innovation. With modern hull shapes, efficient propulsion systems and high-quality interiors, Grand Banks remains true to its roots without neglecting progress.
Among connoisseurs, owning a Grand Banks is still considered an expression of maritime culture, solid taste and technical understanding. Whether on a classic Grand Banks 36 from the 1960s or a modern Grand Banks 60 with a state-of-the-art composite hull, the concept remains the same: a safe, elegant and durable motor yacht for true seafarers.
Kit description
The hull is made of a perfectly manufactured super heavy plastic material. The hull already has moulded beams for the superstructure, and the scuppers are cut out. The decks and superstructure are made of plywood and are removable. Reinforcements and structural components are made of MDF. All necessary fittings are included, mostly made of metal, some etched and some made of brass. The complex railing is pre-fabricated and chrome-plated. The entire interior can be recreated. The benches are included in the kit, ready-made and perfectly crafted. The set includes printed décor for the interior with instruments for the cockpit and carpet. The rudder and shaft system are made of cast metal and are not functional.
The model can, of course, be motorised (twin propeller drive) and equipped with a remote control.
Who is the kit suitable for?
The kit is well suited for model builders with some experience, as the components are highly prefabricated.
What else is needed?
Paints, adhesives and tools are required and can be found in our range.
Conversion to an RC model is technically possible and already planned; there is plenty of space for all components. This requires two complete drives consisting of motor, shaft, propeller and rudder.
What do the assembly instructions look like?
The kit contains printed step-by-step instructions with clear directions. These include two large plan sheets with drawings and a detailed parts list. A German translation is included.
The booklet also contains instructions in English and French.
Instructions are not available for download.
