Artesanía Latina Juan Sebastián Elcano / Esmeralda 1:250 – Wood and plastic model ship of a historic training ship

The Artesanía Latina model kit Juan Sebastián Elcano / Esmeralda on a scale of 1:250 is an attractive wood and plastic model ship for anyone wishing to build a historic sailing ship. The model can be built either as the Spanish training ship Juan Sebastián Elcano or as the Chilean sailing training ship Esmeralda. The kit thus offers two variants steeped in tradition in a single set, combining maritime model-making with the history of famous four-masted training ships.

The Juan Sebastián Elcano was launched in Cádiz in 1927 and continues to serve the Spanish Navy as a training ship to this day. Its name commemorates the navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, who completed the first circumnavigation of the globe following Magellan’s death. The Esmeralda also symbolises nautical training, international training voyages and the long tradition of great sailing training ships. Thanks to the included figurehead, flag and nameplate, the finished model can be displayed in great detail to match the chosen version.

The model kit from Artesanía Latina is designed with beginners in mind and is ideal for model-makers who, having built their first boats or simple wooden models, wish to take the next step towards building a model of a historic sailing ship. The pre-formed plastic hull makes assembly easier, whilst laser-cut wooden parts, hardwoods, brass components, castings and photo-etched parts ensure an attractive level of detail. Pre-sewn sails and a step-by-step video guide provide additional support during construction.

The rigging of the four-masted ship is particularly appealing. It makes the kit an excellent learning project for masts, sails and rigging work. The rigging remains well within the capabilities of beginners, yet offers enough of a challenge to familiarise oneself with the basic techniques of historical ship modelling. With a construction time of around 75 hours, the result is a decorative model of the Juan Sebastián Elcano or Esmeralda, which is ideal for display in a showcase, on a shelf or as part of a collection.
