History of the original:

The Apostol Felipe was a Spanish ship of the line from the early 17th century and belonged to the famous series of the ‘Doce Apóstoles’ (‘Twelve Apostles’), a group of large ships built for the Spanish Crown from the 1620s onwards. These ships bore the names of the twelve apostles and formed the core of Spain's naval power, which still played a leading role in European and transatlantic maritime trade during this era.

The Apostol Felipe was launched around 1629 and was a powerful first-class ship (navío de línea de primera clase), still strongly in the tradition of heavy galleons, but already showing features of the classic ship of the line. Armed with around 90 to 100 cannons spread across several gun decks, it was one of the largest and most powerful ships of its time. It marked the transition from the large merchant and warships of the 16th century to the regular ships of the line that became prevalent in naval service in the 17th century.

In the service of the Spanish Armada, the Apostol Felipe was deployed in both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, where Spain had to secure its trade routes and colonial connections against rivals such as England, France and the Netherlands. Little is known about the ship's specific battles, but like its sister ships, the Apostol Felipe was considered a symbol of the maritime strength and representative claims of the Spanish empire in the 17th century.

Description of the kit:

The kit contains all the materials needed for construction. Selected woods and precision-cut components enable accurate assembly. The model is constructed using a frame-and-plank method, with double planking on the hull, ramin underplanking and precious wood visible planking. The fittings and attachments, most of which are made of metal, are included in a small sorting box. The scope of delivery includes all the rigging material with all the necessary blocks, pulleys and rigging cord, as well as a ready-sewn set of sails. A model stand is not included in the scope of delivery. German assembly instructions for correctly assembling the 4071 individual components are included.

The instruction booklet consists of 89 pages of colourful, well-illustrated step-by-step instructions. Text descriptions and explanatory images. A construction plan and parts lists are included. The rigging is described in detail and in an easy-to-understand manner.
