HMS Endeavour longboat – Artesanía Latina 1:50 wooden kit for ship modelling
The Endeavour's dinghy was a so-called ‘jolly boat’ or ‘longboat’: approximately 8 metres long, designed for around 8 to 10 people, propelled by oarsmen and additionally equipped with sails to move forward in suitable wind conditions. This boat played a crucial role during James Cook's voyages – especially when things got really exciting on the coast: landing on islands, approaching shallow bays, exploring unknown shorelines. The dinghy was used to bring scientists, researchers and crew members ashore to explore geographical features, collect samples and enable encounters with the locals in the first place. It is precisely this ‘work boat’ character that makes the model so attractive: it is not a decorative side project, but a boat with a real function and history.
The longboat of HMS Endeavour is thus one of those models that immediately tells more than ‘just’ a dinghy. In the era of great voyages of discovery, boats on board were practical life insurance: transport, exploration, surveying, safe shore leave – without a boat, little could be done on the coast. It is precisely this role that makes building the Endeavour longboat as a wooden kit so appealing: you are creating a piece of everyday expedition life on a scale of 1:50 that is historically accurate yet remains pleasantly manageable.
The new kit is designed so that you can work with high-quality materials right from the start: the frames come as high-precision laser-cut lime plywood parts, plus there are hand-sewn sails, cotton rigging and finely crafted die-cast brass metal parts as well as etched brass parts for the small, visible details. As a nice extra, a wooden model stand is included – complete with a metal nameplate – so that the finished longboat can be presented neatly. Important for planning: printed instructions are not included; instead, richly illustrated step-by-step instructions are provided digitally and can also be downloaded free of charge.
The kit is so popular because it offers a very ‘honest’ introduction to wooden ship modelling: align the frames neatly, shape the hull, plank it, sand it – and end up with a boat that really looks like a boat. Many model builders like to recommend this project as the ‘next step’ after smaller wooden models, because it teaches the typical techniques without diving straight into the full complexity of a large square-rigged sailing ship. At the same time, the result is impressive enough to stand on its own as a showpiece: The Endeavour longboat has the classic, elegant lines of a working boat of that era and gains visible character with every small addition (ropes, straps, fittings, slight ageing).
What we repeatedly learn from customer feedback, construction reports and social media posts is that building is most enjoyable when you take your time with the finish. If you approach the planking and sanding calmly and carefully, you will be rewarded later when you finish the model – it will not look like a ‘kit’ but like a high-quality wooden model. When rigging and sailing, small things often have a big effect: guide the thread cleanly, tie knots neatly, wax the lines lightly if necessary so that they lie more smoothly – and it is better to work in small stages than to do everything at once. Precisely because a boat is open, these details are immediately visible; neatly laid rigging, cleanly guided lines and a harmoniously treated interior have a greater impact here than on many closed hulls.
