OcCre Royal Fortune – historical ship model kit on a scale of 1:65
The OcCre Royal Fortune ship model kit combines sophisticated historical model-making with the fascinating legend of one of the most famous pirate ships of the 18th century. The Royal Fortune is inextricably linked to the Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts, also known as ‘Black Bart’. Between 1719 and 1722, Roberts and his crew dominated key trade routes in the Atlantic and became one of the most successful figures of the Golden Age of Piracy.
Originally, Bartholomew Roberts sailed as a sailor on merchant ships before being captured by pirates off the West African coast. Following the death of pirate captain Howell Davis, the crew elected him as their new leader. Under Roberts’ command, pirates attacked numerous merchant ships off West Africa, Brazil, in the Caribbean and near Newfoundland. The name Royal Fortune did not refer to a single ship, but was used by Roberts on several occasions for captured vessels. Thus, the Royal Fortune became a symbol of power, wealth and the feared presence of pirates at sea.
The most famous Royal Fortune was originally the Onslow, a ship belonging to the Royal African Company. After its capture, Roberts had it converted into a heavily armed pirate ship. Armed with around 40 cannons, it became his final flagship. In February 1722, off Cape Lopez on the coast of present-day Gabon, a decisive encounter took place with the British HMS Swallow under Captain Chaloner Ogle. During the battle, Roberts was fatally wounded, and shortly afterwards the Royal Fortune surrendered. This event marked the end of one of the most famous pirate careers in Atlantic history.
The Royal Fortune model kit from OcCre brings this story to life as a detailed wooden model. The 1:65 scale model ship is aimed at model builders who wish to construct a historical pirate ship featuring high-quality fittings, impressive size and an authentic appearance. With 3,237 individual parts and an estimated build time of around 460 hours, the kit offers a comprehensive model-building project that will keep you occupied for many weeks or months, ultimately rewarding you with an impressive display piece.
The kit contains everything needed to build the Royal Fortune. Detailed step-by-step assembly instructions, scale drawings and supplementary video tutorials support the building process from the very start. Laser-cut plywood sheets form the sturdy foundation of the construction, whilst high-quality planking strips made from lime, African walnut and sapelli give the model its characteristic wooden appearance. Linden is particularly suitable for fine details, African walnut provides dark and robust hull sections, and sapelli complements the overall look with its warm, reddish grain.
Cast metal parts, photo-etched brass fittings and hand-sewn cotton sails lend the OcCre Royal Fortune wooden model additional depth and historical authenticity. The combination of different woods, precise fittings and carefully crafted sails makes this ship model kit a special project for enthusiasts of historic sailing ships, pirate ships and classic wooden model-making. The finished Royal Fortune impresses with its striking silhouette, its decorative presence and its direct link to one of the most exciting eras in maritime history.
The Royal Fortune model kit from OcCre is therefore far more than a classic ship model kit. It is an invitation to recreate the history of Bartholomew Roberts and his legendary pirate ship step by step. With a medium level of difficulty, the model is suitable for experienced model builders or ambitious beginners looking for an exceptional historical wooden model ship.
