The highly detailed Jolie Brise model impresses with its traditional frame construction, high-quality materials and authentic appearance. Whether as a challenging building project or a decorative display piece – this wooden model kit of a historic sailing ship is a special highlight for any maritime collection.

The history of the Jolie Brise

The Jolie Brise is one of the most famous classic sailing ships of the 20th century. It was built in 1913 in Le Havre as a fast and seaworthy French pilot boat. Its original purpose was to transport harbour pilots to incoming merchant ships. At that time, speed, manoeuvrability and reliability were crucial, as the pilot boats competed to reach the ships as early as possible and escort them safely into the harbour.

The name Jolie Brise can be loosely translated as ‘lovely breeze’ or ‘fresh breeze’ and is a perfect fit for a ship that became renowned for its power, elegance and outstanding sailing qualities. As a classic gaff-rigged cutter, the Jolie Brise was robustly built, powerfully rigged and designed for the demanding conditions of the English Channel.

However, she was built at a time when traditional sailing pilot boats were increasingly being replaced by motorised vessels. As a result, her original career as a working boat was relatively short-lived. After her service as a pilot cutter came to an end, the Jolie Brise was used intermittently as a fishing vessel.

The Jolie Brise later achieved its true fame as an ocean-going yacht. In 1925, she won the first Fastnet Race, thereby making sailing history. The demanding ocean race placed high demands on the vessel, crew and navigation. The Jolie Brise impressively demonstrated her seaworthiness, speed and reliability.

Further victories in the Fastnet Race followed in 1929 and 1930. To this day, the Jolie Brise remains the only vessel to have won this historic offshore race three times. This made her an icon of offshore sailing and a symbol of classic sailing yachts with exceptional performance.

Even outside the world of regattas, the Jolie Brise attracted attention for her exceptional seamanship. In 1932, during the Newport-Bermuda Regatta, she took part in the rescue of the crew of the burning yacht Adriana. As a result, she became known not only as a successful racing yacht, but also as a vessel with a remarkable maritime history.

In the decades that followed, the Jolie Brise changed hands several times and was used for various purposes. Despite her eventful history, her historic character was preserved. She was restored, maintained and repeatedly put back into service. Her classic lines, gaff rig and connection to the early history of ocean sailing make her, to this day, a living monument to maritime tradition.

Since the 1970s, the Jolie Brise has been closely associated with the British Dauntsey’s School and is used as an active training ship. There, she teaches young sailors practical seamanship, teamwork and navigation. The Jolie Brise also continues to take part in ocean-going voyages and traditional sailing events.

This makes the Jolie Brise far more than just a historic ship. It bridges the world of traditional working sailing vessels with the development of modern ocean-going sailing and today’s sail training. It is precisely this extraordinary history that makes the Jolie Brise 1:50 wooden model so appealing: as you build it, you are not only creating an elegant sailing ship in miniature form, but a piece of living maritime history.

The model kit from Artesanía Latina

The Jolie Brise wooden model kit from Artesanía Latina faithfully reproduces the famous French cutter on a 1:50 scale in great detail. The construction uses the classic frame-and-plank method with a false keel and precisely laser-cut wooden parts. This results in a sturdy hull modelled on traditional shipbuilding.

The kit includes high-quality wooden components, fittings, deck details, metal and brass elements, photo-etched parts, rigging twine, water-slide decals and pre-sewn sails. The sails give the finished model a particularly authentic and maritime look.

A wooden stand for displaying the finished model is also included. This allows the Jolie Brise to be stylishly displayed in a display cabinet, on a shelf or in a maritime collection once built.

The combination of neatly crafted components, classic lines and many lovingly crafted details makes this Artesanía Latina Jolie Brise kit an attractive project for anyone who appreciates historic sailing ships and high-quality wooden model building.
