Occre La Candelaria Bombard Stand Model Wooden Kit
History of the original:
The La Candelaria was a Spanish bombard ship built and used in the 18th century for operations in the Mediterranean. Bombard ships were a special type of warship designed to bombard coastal fortifications and harbour facilities with heavy mortars. They arose from the need to attack towns and forts from the sea – a task for which conventional gunboats were unsuitable, as their guns could not fire at high angles.
La Candelaria was a ketch, a two-masted ship with a large main mast near the centre and a smaller mizzen mast at the stern. This design allowed the wide hull to accommodate one or more heavy ship mortars mounted on stable platforms. Unlike frigates or ships of the line, a bomb vessel was comparatively short and squat, but heavily reinforced to withstand the recoil of the mortars.
The Spanish navy used ships such as La Candelaria both in the Mediterranean and on overseas transport routes. In addition to its main role as a coastal attack vessel, it also served as an escort and security ship. Some sources mention that La Candelaria was also occasionally loaded with valuable cargo such as gold and silver from the Spanish colonies – an indication of its versatility.
As a bomb vessel, La Candelaria was one of a series of specialised ships that played an important role in European seafaring in the 17th and 18th centuries. It combined military power with solid construction and represents the era in which Spain sought to assert its maritime strength in the Mediterranean and overseas.
