Artesanía Latina Cutty Sark 1:84 – Tea Clipper Wooden Model Kit (2026 Version)

The Cutty Sark is one of the most famous clippers in maritime history and is regarded as a symbol of the heyday of fast merchant sailing ships. The wooden model kit from Artesanía Latina recreates this legendary ship in the Refreshed Version at a scale of 1:84. Due to the large size of the model, the very high number of parts and the extensive rigging, the kit is ideal for model builders who wish to build and display a representative ship model with a high level of detail.

History of the original

The Cutty Sark was built in 1869 in Dumbarton (Scotland) and was designed as a fast clipper for long-distance trade. Initially, she sailed in the tea trade between China and London, where speed and reliability determined economic success. A particularly well-known episode is the so-called Tea Race of 1872, during which the Cutty Sark lost her rudder in heavy weather and consequently fell decisively behind.

As the tea trade became increasingly unattractive for sailing ships due to competition from steamships, the Cutty Sark switched to the Australian wool trade and experienced her most successful phase there. Later, the ship was sold to Portuguese owners and continued to be used as a cargo ship before returning to England, where it served at times as a training or school ship. Since 1954, the Cutty Sark has been moored as a museum ship in Greenwich (London). Following a fire in 2007, she was restored and remains preserved to this day as a historic original.

Construction and design

The Refreshed version is designed as a classic wooden frame-and-keel kit and is suitable for a high-quality finish. The kit is designed for a structured build with clear part allocation and combines modern manufacturing of the wooden components with extensive metal and detail parts. The model thus offers an excellent basis for a challenging yet well-plannable long-term project, in which, alongside the hull and deck, the masts, standing and running rigging, and the complete rigging determine the character of the finished model.

Materials, components and sails

The Refreshed version of the Cutty Sark is designed as a high-quality wooden kit with clearly separated materials. The load-bearing and visible components consist of laser-cut parts made from American walnut, American cherry, lime wood and lime plywood. For planking, battens and round timber, the kit also includes birch battens, walnut battens and walnut round timber, as well as sapele battens and sapele veneer, allowing the hull, decks and details to be finished neatly and given a visually distinct appearance.

For the finer fittings, the kit contains a brass photo-etched sheet measuring 200 × 130 mm. The numerous small parts are sorted into four transparent boxes and include wooden, brass and die-cast components; in total, the kit comprises more than 3,000 components.

To complete the finished look, 26 pre-sewn sails are included, so that the sail set can be fitted without any sewing required. Fabric-look flags are also included.

The construction documentation consists of a 100-page, colour-printed instruction booklet and five large plan sheets; plans are also available digitally as PDFs and are supplemented by numbered photos and a photographic parts overview, which makes it easier to identify the many individual parts.

Contents and presentation

A wooden stand is included for display, complemented by a brass nameplate. This makes the finished model suitable for immediate display – ideal for a display cabinet, shelf or model-making workshop.
