Spanish galleon San Martin wooden model kit from manufacturer Occre
History of the original:
The San Martín was a Spanish galleon from the late 16th century and one of the most important ships of the famous Spanish Armada of 1588. It was built around 1580 and was originally used as a Portuguese merchant ship before entering the service of the Spanish Crown. Under King Philip II, the San Martín was designated the flagship of the Armada and was under the command of the Duke of Medina Sidonia, the commander-in-chief of the Spanish fleet.
As a powerful first-class galleon, the San Martín had a robust construction, a high-sided hull and was armed with around 48 to 52 guns. With a length of over 50 metres and a crew of several hundred men, it was one of the largest ships of its time. Despite its size, it was not only suitable as a transport ship, but also designed for direct combat at sea, with heavy cannons on the battery decks and light guns on the superstructure.
In 1588, the San Martín led the Armada into the English Channel, where it encountered the English fleet. During the battles at Gravelines and Calais, the ship suffered heavy damage but was able to retreat to Spain thanks to its robust construction and disciplined crew. It finally reached the northern Spanish coast, while much of the Armada was lost to storms or battles.
The San Martín embodies the strength and ambition of Spanish naval power in the 16th century. As the flagship of the Armada, it symbolises the peak, but also the beginning of the decline of Spanish supremacy at sea.
