History of the original:

The Nuestra Señora de la Santísima Trinidad was one of the most famous warships of the 18th century and for a long time the largest sailing ship in the world. It was built in 1769 at the Havana shipyard for the Spanish navy and originally commissioned as a 112-gun ship of the line. Due to increasing rivalry with Great Britain, it was rebuilt and reinforced several times, eventually carrying up to 140 guns – more than any other ship of its time.

With a length of about 63 metres, a width of around 16 metres and a displacement of over 4,900 tonnes, the Santísima Trinidad was a colossus on the world's oceans. Despite its size, however, it was not considered particularly seaworthy or manoeuvrable. Contemporary reports describe it as cumbersome, albeit impressive in its presence.

It took part in numerous battles between the Spanish and British fleets, including the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1797, where it was severely damaged and narrowly escaped destruction. It saw its greatest and final action on 21 October 1805 in the Battle of Trafalgar, where it stood at the centre of the Spanish line. After putting up fierce resistance against several British ships, she was badly hit, eventually captured by the Royal Navy and was to be towed to Gibraltar. However, on the way there, she sank as a result of the damage she had suffered and the bad weather.

The Santísima Trinidad remains a symbol of Spanish naval power in the 18th century to this day. Its sheer size and armament made it a legend among ships of the line, even though its practical usability fell short of expectations.

Description of the kit:

The kit contains all the materials needed for construction. Selected woods and precision-cut components enable accurate assembly. The model is constructed using a frame-and-plank method, with double planking on the hull, ramin underplanking and precious wood visible planking. The fittings and attachments, mostly made of metal, are included in a small sorting box. The scope of delivery includes all the rigging material with all the necessary blocks, pulleys and rigging cord, as well as a ready-sewn set of sails. A model stand is not included in the scope of delivery. German assembly instructions for correctly assembling the 6221 individual components are included.

Who is this kit suitable for?

The kit is suitable for model builders with extensive experience in historical ship modelling. The kit is not suitable for beginners.

The instruction booklet consists of 111 pages of colourful, well-illustrated step-by-step instructions. Text descriptions and explanatory images. A construction plan and parts lists are included. The rigging is described in detail and in an easy-to-understand manner.
