Dragon sailing ship kit with brass keel 1:12 by Billing Boats
History of the original:
In 1928, the Royal Yacht Club in Gothenburg, Sweden, organised a competition for the construction of an inexpensive yacht with a single or double cabin. The yacht was to be suitable for both pleasure and racing. The well-known Norwegian shipbuilder Johan Anker won the competition with his yacht DRACHEN. Originally, a Scandinavian type of wood was used to build the yacht, but after international recognition, mahogany was used. The first DRACHEN was built in Gothenburg in 1929. The first Danish yacht followed in 1930 and it was not until 1931 that the Norwegian yacht DRACHEN followed. The sailing characteristics of the DRACHEN were so good that it was used all over the world, and it became particularly popular in Europe. In the course of time, the DRACHEN developed more and more as a regatta boat and was no longer built in accordance with the original plans. The cabin and the sail plan were changed. Only the hull is still original today.
In 1948, the DRACHEN was included in the Olympic sailing class and all dimensions were determined by the International Sailing Union. Since 1928, this type of boat has participated in numerous Scandinavian and international regattas and is one of the most popular boats in the world.
