Glass filament fabric Finish 24 g/m² – fine-weave surface fabric
The Glass filament fabric Finish 24 g/m² is an exceptionally lightweight, finely woven glass fibre fabric designed for precise surface finishing in model-making. Thanks to its low grammage, it is ideal for any application where components need to be reinforced, smoothed or prepared for a high-quality paint finish without adding unnecessary weight. This combination of stability, low weight and a clean surface plays a crucial role, particularly in aeromodelling, ship modelling and scale modelling.
This fine-finish fabric works very well with epoxy or polyester resin and conforms neatly to gentle curves, surfaces and contours. After lamination, it produces a uniform, durable surface that can be easily sanded, filled and painted once cured. This makes the fabric particularly suitable for sealing balsa, plywood, foam or GRP components whilst simultaneously enhancing their mechanical properties.
Applications in model-making
In model aircraft construction, 24 g/m² glass filament fabric is frequently used for surface coating on wings, fuselages, tail units and engine cowlings. Particularly with balsa or wooden models, the fabric ensures a significantly more durable surface, protects against dents and improves durability in daily use. At the same time, the additional weight remains very low, which is a major advantage for gliders, electric model aircraft and lightweight scale models.
This fine glass fabric is also an excellent choice for model shipbuilding. It can be used to coat wooden fuselages, deck superstructures or for minor GRP repairs. The laminate protects the surface from moisture, increases strength and provides a clean base for priming and painting. Careful application of the glass fabric coating offers vital protection, particularly for models that will later come into contact with water.
In scale and functional model-making, the fabric impresses with its fine texture. It is ideal for visible external surfaces where a smooth, paintable finish is required. Small components, fairings, cowls, covers or moulded parts can be selectively reinforced without details appearing unnecessarily coarse or edges protruding excessively.
Advantages at a glance
The low weight of 24 g/m² makes this glass filament fabric ideal for lightweight constructions. It offers a fine surface structure, is easy to impregnate and enables a clean finish with low resin consumption. Thanks to the thin fabric layer, the shape of the component is preserved whilst the surface becomes significantly more robust. This is a major advantage over heavier glass fabrics, particularly in delicate model-making work.
Processing instructions
For best results, the fabric should be applied to the prepared component whilst dry and free of creases. It is then evenly impregnated with a suitable laminating resin. Excess resin should be avoided, as it is not the amount of resin but the correctly embedded fabric that ensures strength. Once cured, the surface can be finely sanded, lightly filled if necessary, and then primed or painted.
For foam parts, care must be taken to use a system compatible with the resin and solvents. For particularly high-quality surfaces, the Finish fabric can also be used as a final, fine layer over a coarser fabric.
Typical applications
Glass filament fabric Finish 24 g/m² is particularly suitable for coating balsa surfaces, wooden hulls, lightweight GRP components, foam cores, wings, tail units, boat hulls, fairings and scale details. It is the right choice when lightweight reinforcement with a smooth, paintable surface is required.
