Billing Boats Danmark Special Edition 1:75 – Wooden model kit of the Danish training ship
The Billing Boats Danmark Special Edition wooden model kit BB5005 on a scale of 1:75 is a high-quality ship model kit for experienced model-makers who wish to build a large historic sailing ship with classic rigging. The model depicts the famous Danish training ship DANMARK, a three-masted full-rigger with an impressive silhouette, intricate hull construction and a strong maritime presence.
The original, the Skoleskibet DANMARK, is one of Europe’s best-known sailing training ships. It was built in 1933 at the Nakskov Skibsværft in Denmark and was designed from the outset as a training ship for the Danish merchant fleet. The aim was to teach aspiring seafarers practical seamanship under real-world conditions. A three-masted full-rigger was deliberately chosen, as this type of rigging is particularly complex and allows for many different work processes on deck.
On board, cadets learn traditional seamanship, teamwork, navigation, sail handling and life at sea. The DANMARK is therefore not just a ship, but a floating school. To this day, it accommodates numerous students and a permanent crew. During port calls, it also serves as an ambassador for Denmark and maritime training.
The DANMARK played a special role during the Second World War. As the ship was in the USA in 1939 and Denmark was occupied by Germany in 1940, it was unable to return home. Following the attack on Pearl Harbour, Captain Knud Hansen placed the ship and its crew at the disposal of the United States. The DANMARK was subsequently deployed as a training ship for the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London.
Between 1942 and 1945, several thousand American cadets were trained on the DANMARK. Training was deliberately conducted under sail, with traditional manual work on the rigging, yards and sails. As a result, the Danish training ship became an important part of American Coast Guard training and a symbol of friendship between Denmark and the USA. After the war ended, the DANMARK was returned to Denmark and resumed its original role as a training ship.
The Billing Boats Danmark Special Edition kit recreates this historic sailing training ship as a large, highly detailed wooden model. The frame construction, double planking and extensive rigging make this a challenging model-building project. The kit is particularly suitable for model-makers who already have experience in building wooden ship models and are looking for a prestigious display model with strong historical significance.
