French sailing steam frigate L'Orénoque, a wooden model kit from the manufacturer Mamoli
History of the original:
The L'Orénoque was a French sailing steam frigate launched in 1848 and one of the first combined warships of its time. It was built during a period of technological transition, when the navy was moving from pure sailing ships to steam-powered vessels, and thus symbolises the beginning of modern warship construction. With a displacement of around 2,500 tonnes, full square rigging and an additional built-in steam engine with propeller drive, the L'Orénoque combined the long range and flexibility of sail with the new reliability of steam power. Its engine, with around 450 to 500 hp, allowed speeds of 8 to 9 knots under steam, and it could run even faster under sail. Armed with 14 to 16 cannons, it combined striking power with technical innovation. In the 1850s, it was deployed in various overseas territories and in the Mediterranean, particularly during the Crimean War, where it was part of the French fleet in the Black Sea. The L'Orénoque embodies the transition period between the classic sailing frigate and modern steamships, thus occupying an important place in the history of the French navy.
The richly detailed deck superstructure, the carefully crafted characteristic paddle wheels and the classic masts give this decorative model a special appearance and make it an attractive model-building project.
