S/S Hjejlen RC model kit from manufacturer Billing Boats

History of the original:

The S/S Hjejlen is a unique testament to early steam navigation and is considered the oldest coal-fired paddle steamer still in operation in the world. It was built in 1861 by the Baumgarten & Burmeister shipyard in Copenhagen and launched on June 11 of the same year. Shortly thereafter, the ship was transferred to Silkeborg, where it was officially commissioned by King Frederik VII on June 24, 1861. Its name, “Hjejlen,” means “gold plover” in English and refers to the bird of the same name, which is widespread in Denmark.

With a length of around 27 meters, a width of 3.80 meters, and a draft of approximately 1.70 meters, the Hjejlen was perfectly suited for sailing on the lakes around Silkeborg. It is powered by a steam engine that is still in working order today, with an output of around 25 to 40 horsepower, which enables it to reach speeds of up to eight knots via large paddle wheels. This technology, which was modern in the mid-19th century, still gives the ship its characteristic appearance today and makes every trip a piece of living technical history.

Originally, the Hjejlen was mainly used to transport passengers and day trippers who wanted to discover the lake landscape around Silkeborg. The connection between the town and the Himmelbjerget excursion destination was crucial for the development of regional tourism. From 1932, the steamboat was also used as a mail boat, which gave it an additional important role in the everyday life of the region. Despite its advanced age, the Hjejlen remained in service, undergoing regular maintenance and restoration. Great importance was attached to preserving the original structure and, in particular, the historic steam engine.

Today, the S/S Hjejlen is much more than just a technical monument. It belongs to the Hjejleselskabet shipping company and still operates regularly on the Silkeborg lakes during the summer months. For locals and tourists alike, a trip on the historic paddle steamer is a very special experience that offers insights into the early days of steam shipping. On the occasion of its 150th anniversary in 2011, the ship was honored with a ceremony attended by Queen Margrethe II and the issuance of a Danish commemorative coin.

The Hjejlen is therefore not only a popular excursion boat, but also a floating cultural heritage site that continues to represent a combination of tradition, technological history, and tourist attraction. Every trip on board is a living encounter with the past – and proof of the extraordinary longevity and significance of this historic steamboat.
