Golden Hind galleon model kit from manufacturer Occre
History of the original:
The Golden Hind – Drake's famous circumnavigation of the world
The Golden Hind (golden calf) was an English galleon that became famous primarily through Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the world between 1577 and 1580. The ship was originally named Pelican. It was built in England in the 1570s, was about 100 feet (around 30 metres) long and, by the standards of the time, was a medium-sized, manoeuvrable but sturdy sailing ship.
On 13 December 1577, Drake set sail with a small fleet of five ships on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I to undertake an expedition against Spanish supremacy on the world's oceans. During the voyage, he renamed the Pelican the Golden Hind in honour of his patron Sir Christopher Hatton, whose coat of arms featured a golden hind.
Drake's voyage took him from England across the Atlantic to the coast of South America, through the dangerous Strait of Magellan and along the west coast of America, where he raided Spanish settlements and ships. A highlight of the voyage was the capture of the Spanish treasure galleon Nuestra Señora de la Concepción (also known as Cacafuego) off the coast of Peru in 1579. The booty was enormous and made the expedition extremely profitable.
After crossing the Pacific, the Golden Hind sailed via the Moluccas to the Cape of Good Hope and back to England. On 26 September 1580, Drake arrived in Plymouth – the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe and the second person ever to do so after Ferdinand Magellan.
The Golden Hind was then put on display in Deptford Harbour, where it remained as a monument to Drake's achievements. The ship stood on land for more than 70 years until it finally fell into disrepair. Today, several replicas commemorate this historic voyage.
