English warship galleon HMS Revenge model ship kit from manufacturer Victory Models/Amati
History of the model:
HMS Revenge was one of the most famous English warships of the 16th century and symbolises England's rise to maritime power under Queen Elizabeth I. It was built in 1577 at the royal shipyard in Deptford and was one of the first so-called ‘race-built galleons’ designed by Sir John Hawkins. This new type of ship marked a turning point in warship construction: lower superstructures, sleeker lines and broader armament made the Revenge faster, more manoeuvrable and more powerful in battle than the older, high-sided Spanish galleons.
With a length of about 40 metres, a width of around 12 metres and armament of about 46 to 50 guns, HMS Revenge was one of the most modern warships of its time. Its crew consisted of about 250 to 300 men, including sailors, gunners and soldiers. Thanks to its balanced design, it was suitable for both fleet engagements and independent operations.
The Revenge took part in the famous battle against the Spanish Armada in 1588, in which the English fleet thwarted Spain's attempt to invade England.
Under its then commander Sir Francis Drake, it played an important role in the attacks against the cumbersome Spanish ships. However, it gained fame above all through its last mission in 1591, when, under the command of Sir Richard Grenville, it fought against overwhelming Spanish superiority in the Azores.
Despite facing more than twenty enemy ships, the Revenge fought back for many hours until it was completely incapacitated. Grenville fell in battle, but his resistance became legendary in England – celebrated in ballads and hailed as a symbol of unyielding English courage.
After its surrender, the heavily damaged HMS Revenge was taken over by the Spanish, but sank shortly afterwards in a storm.
The galleon HMS Revenge (1577) is considered one of the most beautiful and significant ships of the Elizabethan fleet. It represents the technical innovation in shipbuilding of its time and the courage of the generation that laid the foundation for British naval supremacy.
