History of the original:

The HMS Revenge was one of the most famous English warships of the late 16th century and a symbol of England's rise to maritime power under Elizabeth I. It was built in Deptford in 1577 and designed as a modern race-built galleon – a type of ship that was significantly superior to the cumbersome Spanish galleons thanks to its lower superstructure, better sail trim and higher speed.

The Revenge was about 40 metres long, carried between 46 and 50 guns and had a crew of around 250 to 300 men. Its design, with a lower freeboard and a strong broadside, made it a precursor to the later line tactics that would dominate naval warfare in the 17th century.

The Revenge became famous in 1588 as part of the English fleet in the battle against the Spanish Armada. However, its greatest legend was established during its last mission in 1591, when Sir Richard Grenville fought against overwhelming Spanish superiority with the Revenge near the Azores. Over twenty enemy ships harassed it until it was unable to manoeuvre. Grenville fell, but his heroic resistance became a myth in England, glorified in ballads and reports.

The badly damaged Revenge was taken over by the Spanish, but sank shortly afterwards in a storm. Thus, one of the most famous ships of the Elizabethan navy was lost – a ship that still stands for courage, steadfastness and technical innovation in shipbuilding today.

Description of the kit:

The kit contains all the materials needed for construction. Selected woods and precision-cut components enable accurate assembly. The model is constructed using a frame-and-plank method, with double planking on the hull, ramin underplanking and hardwood outer planking. The fittings and attachments, mostly made of metal, are included in a small sorting box. The scope of delivery includes all the rigging material with all the necessary blocks, pulleys and rigging cord, and a ready-sewn set of sails. A model stand is not included in the scope of delivery. German assembly instructions for correctly assembling the 3076 individual components are included.

What do the assembly instructions look like?

The instruction booklet consists of 55 pages of colourful, well-illustrated step-by-step instructions. Text descriptions and explanatory images. A construction plan and parts lists are included. The rigging is described in detail and in an easy-to-understand manner.
