Occre HMS Bounty standing model kit made of wood
History of the original:
The HMS Bounty is one of the most famous ships in British maritime history, made famous by the legendary mutiny on the Bounty in 1789.
The ship was originally built in Hull in 1784 as a cargo ship under the name Bethia. The Royal Navy purchased it in 1787, converted it and renamed it HMS Bounty. With a length of about 27 metres, a displacement of around 215 tonnes and a crew of 46, the Bounty was a rather small naval vessel that was selected for a very specific mission: on behalf of the British Crown, it was to bring breadfruit tree cuttings from Tahiti to the Caribbean to create a cheap source of food for slave plantations there.
The commander of the voyage was Lieutenant William Bligh, an experienced officer who had previously sailed under James Cook. The Bounty sailed from England in December 1787 and, after a long and difficult journey, reached Tahiti in October 1788. The ship remained there for five months while the crew collected breadfruit plants and integrated into life on the island.
On 28 April 1789, the famous mutiny took place: parts of the crew, led by Fletcher Christian, rebelled against Bligh's command. Bligh and 18 men who remained loyal were set adrift in an open boat, but survived an adventurous 6,000-kilometre journey to Timor – one of the greatest nautical achievements of the time.
The mutineers sailed the Bounty back to Tahiti and on to the remote island of Pitcairn, where they finally set fire to the ship and sank it to avoid detection. The descendants of these mutineers still live on Pitcairn Island today.
The story of HMS Bounty has since been recounted many times in books and films and is one of the most famous episodes in maritime history – a symbol of adventure, rebellion and the harshness of life on board in the 18th century.
