History of the original:

The USS Constitution, better known as ‘Old Ironsides’, is a wooden heavy frigate of the US Navy and is considered the oldest warship still in service in the world. It was designed under the Naval Act of 1794 as one of six original frigates of the young American fleet, constructed by Joshua Humphreys and built in Boston at the shipyard of Edmund Hartt; it was ceremoniously launched on 21 October 1797. Officially classified as a 44-gun frigate, the Constitution often carried over 50 guns, including 24-pounders on the main deck and 32-pounder carronades on the upper deck. With a length of about 93 metres overall, a width of 13 metres and an exceptionally solid hull made of live oak, she was more resilient than many other ships of her time. She saw her first action in the Quasi-War with France and the First Barbary War. However, it became famous in the War of 1812 when it defeated the British frigate HMS Guerrière and enemy cannonballs bounced off its hull without effect, earning it the nickname ‘Old Ironsides’. In the following decades, she served as a flagship in the Mediterranean and off the African coast, circumnavigated the globe in the 1840s, and was later used as a training ship. When plans to scrap her became known in 1830, a broad protest movement prevented her demise, and the ship was preserved. Today, the USS Constitution is moored at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, maintained by the US Navy and open to the public as a museum ship – an impressive symbol of the early history of the American Navy.

Description of the kit:

The kit contains all the parts needed to build the model. The keel and frames are precision laser cut. All the wood and strips for the double planking are selected by hand. Some deck parts feature laser engraving. The fittings are made of cast metal and etched brass. Self-adhesive copper tape for the hull planking, rigging material and flags are included in the kit. A set of sails is not included. Large construction plans and multilingual instructions guide you safely through the entire construction process.

What do the building instructions look like?

The kit contains 15 large-format construction plans with drawings and sketches that describe the construction process. Technical understanding is required here. The instructions assume basic knowledge of ship model building.
