H.H.S Unicorn model kit from manufacturer Corel

History of the original:

The HMS Unicorn (1748) was a British frigate of the Royal Navy, built according to plans by Frederick Henrik af Chapman, one of the most important shipbuilding engineers of the 18th century. Chapman is considered a pioneer of scientific shipbuilding, as he was the first to systematically incorporate mathematical calculations and model tests into the construction of warships.

The Unicorn was one of a series of frigates built for the Royal Navy in the mid-18th century, a period in which frigate design underwent significant development. With its comparatively slender lines, improved sailing characteristics and a balanced ratio of speed and armament, it was a match for modern adversaries, especially French frigates.

As a frigate with around 28 guns, the Unicorn was primarily intended for reconnaissance missions, protecting merchant ships and fighting enemy privateers. It marks the transition from the cumbersome, purely combat-oriented ships of earlier designs to the versatile and fast frigates that formed the basis of British naval power in the later 18th century.

Chapman's influence is evident in the improved hull shape, which combined speed and stability – an approach that shaped many subsequent classes of ships. Thus, the HMS Unicorn of 1748 represents not only the history of the Royal Navy, but also the beginning of a new era in European warship construction.

Description of the kit:

A scale was chosen for the construction of the model that allows for a good reproduction of all details. The kit contains all the materials and parts needed for construction. All woods are of selected good quality. The fitting set is very extensive and of high quality. The figurehead is made of cast brass, cannons and stern decoration are made of cast metal. A set of sails is not included in the kit but is available as an option. Rigging material is included in the kit. The rigging yarn is very carefully twisted and easy to work with.
