The Juan Sebastián de Elcano is one of the world’s best-known large sailing ships still in active service. This Spanish Navy training sailing ship was built in Cádiz and launched on 5 March 1927. Since 1928, the four-masted topsail schooner has primarily been used for the nautical training of prospective officers in the Spanish Navy and represents Spain during international port visits and maritime events. The ship was named after the Spanish navigator Juan Sebastián Elcano, who completed the first circumnavigation of the globe begun by Ferdinand Magellan. Even almost a century after its launch, the original vessel remains in active service.
