Graupner Model Making – RC technology and accessories steeped in tradition
Graupner is one of the most traditional names in German model making. From the brand’s early years, Graupner has been closely associated with the development of aeroplane and boat modelling and, later, in particular, RC model making. For many decades, Graupner remote controls, model kits, motors, servos and accessories were standard equipment for numerous model-makers.
The brand also has a long history in model boat building. As early as the 1930s, it was offering plans and materials for model boats. Later, numerous well-known Graupner model boats were developed, along with an extensive range of accessories for radio-controlled boats and ships.
Today, we mainly stock Graupner RC electronics and accessories for model boat building, including receivers, servos and propellers.
Graupner and the history of RC model making
Graupner’s history began in Stuttgart in 1930. The company developed from a small woodworking business into one of Germany’s best-known model-making suppliers.
Just a few years later, the range was expanded to include model aeroplanes as well as plans and materials for model ships. In the decades that followed, Graupner played a key role in popularising radio-controlled model-making in Germany.
For many model-makers, the name Graupner therefore remains closely associated to this day with classic model ships, model aircraft, remote-control systems and model-making accessories.
Particularly in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, an extensive range of models, propulsion systems and RC components was developed. Numerous classic Graupner model ships are held in high regard today by collectors and experienced modellers.
Graupner RC technology for model ships
For a fully functional RC model ship, it is not just the hull itself that matters. The remote control, receiver, servos, motor, speed controller and propulsion system must all work together reliably.
Over many decades, Graupner has developed components specifically for this field and was particularly renowned for its remote control and receiver technology.

Graupner HoTT receivers
An important part of the Graupner RC range is HoTT technology. The abbreviation stands for ‘Hopping Telemetry Transmission’ and refers to the 2.4 GHz radio system used by Graupner.
Depending on the model, Graupner HoTT receivers are available with varying numbers of channels. This means that both simple RC boats and more complex functional models can be equipped with numerous additional functions.
In a classic motorboat, for example, channels are required for the speed controller and rudder servo. In sophisticated functional models, lighting, sound, pumps, cranes, winches, bow thrusters or other special functions can also be controlled.
A larger number of available channels can therefore be particularly useful for functional model boats.
Graupner servos for model boat building
Graupner servos can also be used for a wide range of tasks in RC model boat building.
The classic application is steering the rudder. Depending on the size and design of the model, servos can also be used for sail adjustment, fire monitors, flaps, cranes or other moving functions.
When selecting a suitable servo, factors such as holding force, dimensions, operating voltage, gear ratio and speed should be taken into account.
Sufficient holding force is particularly important for larger rudders or special functions subject to mechanical stress.
Graupner propellers
The traditional Graupner range also includes propellers for RC model boats.
In our shop, you will find, amongst other things, Graupner K-series propellers in various diameters, as well as right-hand and left-hand versions.
The correct propeller has a significant impact on handling, power consumption and the load on the motor and speed controller. The diameter, pitch and direction of rotation should therefore be suited to the drive system used and the model in question.
In twin-propeller models, counter-rotating propellers are frequently used, allowing the torques generated by the propellers to partially cancel each other out.
Graupner – a brand of special significance for model boat building
Hardly any other German model-making brand has been associated with classic RC model building for as long as Graupner.
Many model ships still being built or restored today are based on earlier Graupner kit sets or construction plans. Some models developed decades ago are still being restored, modernised or fitted with the latest RC technology.
As a result, Graupner holds not only technical significance but also special historical importance in model shipbuilding.
With older Graupner models in particular, modern RC accessories can be used to replace the original equipment or to get existing models back into working order.
