The history of the Jolie Brise
The Jolie Brise is one of the most famous classic sailing ships of the 20th century. It was built in 1913 in Le Havre as a fast and seaworthy French pilot boat. Its original purpose was to transport harbour pilots to incoming merchant ships. At that time, speed, manoeuvrability and reliability were crucial, as the pilot boats competed to reach the ships as early as possible and escort them safely into the harbour.
The name Jolie Brise can be loosely translated as ‘lovely breeze’ or ‘fresh breeze’ and is a perfect fit for a ship that became renowned for its power, elegance and outstanding sailing qualities.
