Plywood for model shipbuilding

Plywood for model shipbuilding is an essential construction material for building model ships. Thanks to its multi-layered structure, model-making plywood retains its shape well whilst being easy to work with. It is particularly suitable for the keel, frames, decks, bulkheads, superstructures and other load-bearing components of a model ship.

In our range, you will find lime plywood in various thicknesses from 1.5 to 5 mm as well as thin mahogany plywood for various applications in wooden model shipbuilding.

Lime plywood for keels and frames

In the classic frame-building method for a model ship, the keel and frames form the basic framework of the future hull. Plywood is particularly suitable for these components, as it offers greater dimensional stability than simple solid timber.

Depending on the size and scale of the model, different thicknesses of material can be used. Thinner plywood sheets are suitable for smaller frames, decks and lightweight structures, whilst thicker sheets can be used, for example, for keel sections, larger frames and sturdy hull structures.

Plywood for decks and superstructures

Thin model-making plywood is also ideal as a substructure for decks. Individual deck planks made from wooden strips can then be attached to the cut-to-size plywood surface to replicate the typical appearance of a ship’s deck.

Cabins, deckhouses, bulkheads and other superstructures can also be made from thin plywood. The material can be sawn, sanded, drilled and, depending on its thickness, also worked with a model-making knife.

Mahogany plywood for visible components

In addition to classic limewood plywood, we also stock mahogany plywood with a decorative wood finish. It is particularly suitable for components where the natural wood appearance is to remain visible – for example, for deck surfaces, superstructures or other cladding on historical and classic model ships.

Model-making plywood in various thicknesses

The required plywood thickness depends on the scale and the specific component. Thinner sheets are often used for lightweight structures and decks, whilst the load-bearing frame of a larger model ship may require correspondingly thicker material.

Thanks to its good workability, limewood plywood for model-making is suitable for both manual cutting and precision-machined components.
