A famous racing cutter with a long history

The original was built in Ireland in 1898 to a design by the Scottish yacht designer William Fife III and was initially named Yum. Éric Tabarly learnt to sail as a child on his father’s sailing yacht and took over the vessel – which by then was in dire need of restoration – in 1952.

Through an extensive restoration, Tabarly saved the historic yacht and made it the starting point for the subsequent Pen-Duick series. The elegant lines of the classic cutter and its close association with one of France’s most significant sailors made the Pen Duick an icon of French sailing history.

The model from Artesanía Latina is available as an officially licensed kit and faithfully reproduces the distinctive appearance of the historic yacht in a compact form.

Classic keel-and-frame construction

Although this is a beginner’s kit, the model is built using a simplified keel-and-frame construction method. This construction principle is based on traditional shipbuilding and clearly illustrates how the shape of a ship’s hull is formed from the keel, frames and outer planking.

The kit comprises 54 precisely fitted wooden parts. The finely laser-engraved deck already shows the individual planks and ensures a convincing wooden appearance without the need for time-consuming fitting with separate wooden strips. This results in a highly detailed model without the process being made unnecessarily difficult by particularly complicated steps.

Complete Easy Kit with paints and glue

The Pen Duick Easy Kit contains not only the wooden parts of the model, but also sails, rigging twine, flags, glue, paints and brushes. This means that all the essential materials for assembly and painting are already included in the pack.

A matching model stand is also included in the kit. Once the model is complete, the Pen Duick can therefore be displayed immediately and presented to its best advantage. Only basic model-making tools such as a craft knife, tweezers, sandpaper and, if necessary, small clamps are recommended.

Step by step to the finished model

A printed step-by-step guide accompanies the assembly process. In addition, Artesanía Latina provides a video tutorial which can be accessed via the QR code on the packaging. This allows the individual steps to be followed both in pictures and in the video.

The manufacturer describes the Pen Duick as a compact weekend project. This makes the kit ideal as a first wooden model ship, as a joint model-building project, or as a gift for sailing and maritime enthusiasts. At the same time, erecting the mast, fitting the sails and installing the rigging provide an introduction to the basics needed for later, more extensive model ship projects.
