Graupner mz-18 HoTT – 9-channel remote control with colour touchscreen
The Graupner mz-18 HoTT (S1005.77) is a programmable 2.4 GHz transmitter with nine control channels, a 3.5-inch colour touchscreen and integrated telemetry. The system offers extensive settings for fixed-wing, glider and helicopter models and can also be used for RC boats with multiple propulsion systems and special functions. The German-language menu navigation, ball-bearing control sticks and audible feedback assist with operation. A receiver is not included with this single-transmitter offer.
Nine channels for propulsion and special functions
On a model boat, for example, the speed controller, rudder servo, bow thruster, lighting and sound can be assigned to separate control elements. Switches are suitable for on/off functions, whilst proportional controls are used for continuous movements. Additional switching modules may be required for lights or other electrical loads. The mz-18 has nine independent control channels; the number of servo outputs available depends on the receiver used.
HoTT radio system with frequency hopping and telemetry
Graupner HoTT (Hopping Telemetry Transmission) uses a bidirectional 2.4 GHz radio link with frequency hopping across up to 75 frequencies. The receiver can report data on its reception status and supply voltage. Additional, compatible telemetry sensors enable further measurements, depending on the equipment, such as temperature, current, RPM, GPS or vario. The remote control can output measurement values and warnings audibly via speakers or headphones, without the need to keep your eyes on the display at all times.
Options include, for example, the GR-12L with six servo connections and the GR-16 with eight connections. For a system where all nine channels are to be output individually, the GR-24 HoTT is a suitable choice. It has twelve servo connections, but the mz-18 still provides nine control channels. HoTT receivers are not compatible with any other 2.4 GHz radio protocols.
Touchscreen, model memory and individual servo settings
The 3.5-inch TFT colour touchscreen allows direct selection of the programming menus and the display of received telemetry data. Servo travel and limits, direction of rotation, neutral position and delays can be adjusted to suit the fitted servo. Dual Rate can be used to reduce the maximum deflection; Expo adjusts the response around the centre of the stick without sacrificing the full end-of-travel deflection. A button lock prevents accidental operation.
Different settings can be stored in 30 internal model memories and copied as required. The microSD card slot enables, amongst other things, the backing up of model data and the recording of telemetry information. The transmitter software can be updated via the USB interface.
Free mixers and channel assignment for complex models
The mz-18 offers five freely programmable linear mixers and three 7-point curve mixers, each depending on the selected flight phase. This allows control movements to be combined with one another or their progression to be adjusted. In model boat building, for example, coordinated control of two speed controllers is conceivable: both motors respond to throttle, whilst an additional mixer ratio influences the difference in speed when cornering. The specific implementation depends on the controllers, the channel assignment and the desired driving style.
The assignment of sensors and outputs can be changed. This allows special functions to be assigned to suitable switches, whilst important functions remain accessible via the control sticks. However, the mixers do not increase the number of the nine control channels.
Flight modes and special functions for model aircraft
For fixed-wing and helicopter models, up to six flight modes are available, for example for different take-off, normal flight or landing settings. Depending on the flight phase, settings such as dual rate, expo and mixers can be adjusted. For fixed-wing models, the mz-18 supports various wing and tail configurations, aileron differentiation, V-tail, butterfly and other flap mixers. For helicopters, depending on the model type selected, features include 7-point throttle and pitch curves as well as swashplate mixers. These functions are intended for appropriately equipped model aircraft; they are not required for a simple RC boat.
Precise control and adjustable servo cycle time
The ball-bearing-mounted stick mechanisms enable sensitive control. With compatible digital servos, a servo cycle time of 10 ms can be set. For analogue servos or mixed servo set-ups, however, the Graupner manual specifies 20 ms. The shorter cycle time is therefore not a universal performance specification for all connected electronics and should only be selected for components suitable for this purpose.
Failsafe, range test and teacher-pupil mode
The system features a range test, low-voltage warnings and configurable failsafe functions. For a functional vessel, it is particularly important to specify how the propulsion system should behave in the event of a loss of radio contact. For programming model aircraft, teacher-pupil mode via cable or a compatible wireless HoTT connection is also provided. The actual radio range depends, amongst other things, on the receiver, antenna layout and local conditions; a fixed range cannot be guaranteed for every model type.
Personalised purchasing advice
We can advise you on choosing a suitable HoTT receiver, channel allocation and the effective use of mixers, switches and telemetry functions. For RC model boats, we can, on request, match speed controllers, rudder servos, drive motors, propellers, shaft systems, batteries and control modules to the model. This allows us to clarify before installation whether the nine available channels and the control options of the mz-18 are sufficient for the planned project.
