Buying guide: Finding the right ship model

To help you choose the right kit, you should consider the following criteria:

1. Level of experience
   • Beginners: Small schooners, cutters or compact ships with simple rigging
   • Advanced: Frigates, galleons or ships with multi-masted rigging
   • Experts: large sailing vessels such as ships of the line or highly detailed replicas (e.g. USS Constitution)
2. Scale & size
   • Smaller scales (e.g. 1:200–1:150): quicker to build, take up little space
   • Medium scales (1:100–1:72): a good compromise between level of detail and building effort
   • Large scales (1:64–1:48): extremely detailed, require experience, time and sufficient display space
3. Historical period
   • Antiquity & the Middle Ages: Viking ships, Hanseatic cogs
   • Age of Sail: galleons, frigates, clippers
   • Modern classics: steamers, tugs, training ships such as the Gorch Fock
4. Accessories & enhancements
   • Rope and blocks for the rigging
   • Brass fittings, cannons and railings for detail
   • Paints, stains and tools for an authentic finish
