Krick Modellbau – Model ships, steam engines and accessories since 1953

Krick Modelltechnik is one of Germany’s longest-established companies in the field of traditional model-making. Since 1953, this family-run business has been developing and selling model kits, accessories, materials and technical components for various areas of model-making.

For many decades, there has been a particular focus on model shipbuilding. The Krick range includes RC model ships, historical ship kits, steam boats, steam engines, electric motors, fittings, wood, tools and numerous accessories. Krick thus caters to both beginners and experienced model-makers who are building a complete model ship, restoring an existing model or require individual components for their own project.

The history of Krick Modelltechnik

The history of Krick Modelltechnik began in 1953. The company’s founder, Klaus Krick, spun off the model-making division from his father’s business and established Krick Modelltechnik. From the very beginning, the development of the company’s own models played a key role.

Over the decades, numerous aircraft and ship model designs were created, some of which remained in the range for many years. Using modern manufacturing processes such as laser and CNC technology, classic designs were repeatedly revised and adapted to current production capabilities. Today, the family-run business is managed by the next generation and is one of the most comprehensive suppliers of ship model-making items, materials and model-making accessories in Germany.

Krick Ship Models and Kit Sets

Ship modelling is one of the most important areas of the Krick brand. The range comprises various types of ships and construction methods, including motor yachts, tugs and workboats, fishing and coastal boats, steam boats, sailing boats, historical ship models, functional models and beginner’s kits.

The models differ significantly in terms of materials, level of difficulty and technical features. Depending on the kit, hulls are made from ABS, GRP or wood. Consequently, the range extends from classic wooden model-making to modern RC functional models with pre-fabricated plastic hulls.

Krick offers models for different levels of experience. Beginners can gain their first experience in building and operating an RC boat with comparatively simple models. More sophisticated models, on the other hand, feature extensive superstructures, fittings and technical functions. With many functional models, it is not just the appearance that takes centre stage. Additional functions such as lighting, cranes, pumps, fire monitors or other moving components can significantly enhance the model’s technical capabilities.

romarin by krick – classic Robbe model ships continued

A significant expansion of the Krick range took place in 2015 with the takeover of the model ship division of the former company Robbe Modellsport. Since 2016, numerous well-known former Robbe models have been continued under the brand romarin by krick. The models have been redesigned and adapted to modern manufacturing methods.

The romarin range includes, or has included, well-known models such as Katja, Dolly, Najade, San Diego, the Düsseldorf fireboat, Paula, Neptun, Happy Hunter and Comtesse. As a result, numerous classics of German RC model boat building remain available today as kit sets or accessory ranges.

Krick Steam Boats and Steam Engines

A particularly distinctive part of the Krick range is steam boats and model steam engines. As early as the late 1980s, Krick began to focus increasingly on the development of models for real steam engines. This gave rise to a model series that combines classic ship models with functioning steam propulsion systems.

Well-known Krick steam boats include, for example, Anna, Alexandra and Victoria. With these models, it is not just the construction of the boat that is interesting; the installation and operation of a real model steam engine are also part of the model-building experience.

Krick offers various steam engine systems specifically designed for use in model ships. These include, amongst others, the well-known Alex and Victor engines, as well as other variants for different ship sizes. Depending on the version, such systems consist of a steam engine, boiler, burner and the necessary pipework and fittings.

Model steam engines thus offer a particularly authentic alternative to the classic electric drive.

Motors, propulsion technology and boat accessories

In addition to steam engines, Krick offers numerous components for electric boat propulsion systems. These include, amongst others, brushed motors, motor mounts, propeller shafts, couplings, universal joints, propellers, steering systems and other propulsion accessories.

Robust brush motors continue to be used frequently, particularly in functional and scale model-making. When assembling a propulsion system, the motor, battery voltage, speed controller, propeller shaft and propeller should be matched as closely as possible.

Krick offers a wide selection of propellers in various diameters, pitches and directions of rotation, as well as matching shaft and rudder components. In twin-propeller models, clockwise and anti-clockwise propellers are often combined. For reliable operation, it is particularly important that the motor, coupling and propeller shaft are correctly aligned.

Fittings, timber and materials

A particularly extensive section of the Krick range comprises fittings and detail parts for model ships. These include, for example, railings, blocks, stanchions, fenders, gun barrels, rings and eyelets, rudder parts, bollards, ventilators and deck fittings.

These parts are not only required for Krick kits. They are also suitable for self-built models, restorations and the individual refinement of other models. In scale model-making in particular, suitable fittings enable a significantly more true-to-life design.

Krick is also a major supplier of wood and materials for model-making. The range includes numerous wooden strips and round rods in various types of wood and dimensions, such as limewood strips, walnut strips, pine strips, round rods and plywood. These materials are required, amongst other things, for hull planking, decks, superstructures, masts and custom constructions.

Tools, spare parts and accessories

The Krick range includes numerous model-making tools for cutting, drilling, sanding, bending, measuring, clamping, securing and painting. In classic wooden model-making in particular, small specialised tools make many steps in the process much easier. These include, for example, tweezers, files, knives, drill bits, sanding tools and small clamps.

Another advantage of established model-making systems is the availability of spare parts and accessories. Krick offers individual spare parts for many of its own ship models. Construction manuals and parts lists enable users to identify the required components and reorder them specifically.

This is particularly useful for older models that are to be restored or technically overhauled after many years of service. Numerous former Robbe accessories have also been reincorporated into the Krick and romarin ranges following the takeover of the ship model division.

Traditional model-making with modern manufacturing

Krick combines classic model-making concepts with modern manufacturing methods. Laser-cutting technology was adopted early on, followed later by CNC processes, to manufacture components with greater precision. This allows traditional designs to be continued whilst simultaneously improving the finer details.

Despite modern manufacturing, the actual building process remains an essential part of the hobby: parts must be fitted, glued, sanded, painted and assembled.
