Folkeboat RC sailing ship kit Manufacturer Krick Modellbau
History of the original:
The Nordic Folkeboat has its origins in 1941. At a time marked by World War II, the Scandinavian Sailing Association launched a competition. The aim was to develop a simple, robust, and inexpensive sailing boat for recreational sailing and regattas – a “people's boat” in the truest sense of the word. Several designs were submitted, but instead of choosing a single winner, it was decided to construct a new boat based on the best ideas. The result was the Nordic Folkeboat, which was first built in 1942.
Right from the start, the boat impressed with its seaworthiness, classic design, and good sailing characteristics. It spread rapidly throughout the Scandinavian countries and was soon also being sailed in Germany, Great Britain, and the USA. It enjoyed great popularity, especially in the Baltic Sea, and became an integral part of sailing culture.
Construction and character of the boat
The Nordic Folkeboat was originally built entirely of wood – more precisely, using traditional clinker construction. This technique, in which wooden planks are laid overlapping and riveted together, ensures a particularly stable and seaworthy hull. The clinker planking also gives the boat its characteristic, elegant look. In later decades, versions made of GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) were also developed, which are easier to maintain but still modeled on the classic wooden construction.
With a length of about 7.60 meters and a width of around 2.20 meters, the boat is compact but still spacious enough for longer trips for two. The draft is about 1.20 meters. The Folkeboat is equipped with a sloop rig – i.e., a mainsail and a jib. The total sail area is around 24 square meters, which gives the boat good but still easy-going sailing characteristics. It really shows its strengths in rough weather: thanks to its high ballast ratio and balanced lines, it is extremely stable and reliable.
The interior of the Folkeboat is kept simple, in keeping with its philosophy. It offers basic comfort for weekend trips, but no unnecessary extras. Sailing a Folkeboat is sailing in its original form – honest, direct, and down-to-earth.
Description of the kit:
The classic Folkeboat hull is made of wood and clinker-built. This construction method was also chosen for the model in order to preserve the charm of this magnificent Nordic wooden construction. Accordingly, the frames and the entire clinker planking are precisely laser-cut. The high-quality plywood can be stained in the desired wood color and then clear-coated. Folkeboats were built from a wide variety of local woods. Assembly requires precise work, but is not difficult due to the high degree of prefabrication of the parts.
The RC model kit contains all the laser-cut wooden parts and all the fittings for a fully functional model; the deck is already engraved. The sails are pre-cut and must be glued together with the adhesive tape and reinforcement tape provided, and can then be sewn. The mast is assembled from several layers of plywood parts and sanded.
The ballast keel (accessory) is specially cast and must be ordered separately due to its heavy weight. It already has molded threaded rods that are inserted into the wooden keel and screwed in from the inside.
The basic version of the kit is equipped with a self-tacking jib with a jib boom, which is easier to handle for model sailing. For this version, only one sail winch is required for both sails. For experienced model sailors, a larger jib sail is available, which is then pulled past the mast to the other side with two additional sail winches when tacking—a challenging and very realistic tacking option that requires some skill and practice. This variant can also be retrofitted.
