Wood Strips

Wooden strips for model shipbuilding

Wooden strips for model shipbuilding are amongst the most important building materials used in the construction of historical and modern wooden model ships. They are used, amongst other things, for hull planking, deck planking, bulwarks, rubbing strakes, superstructures, decorative mouldings and numerous detailed elements.

In our range, you will find modelling strips, planks and round rods in a wide variety of dimensions and different types of wood, such as lime, walnut, pear, mahogany, sapele, ramin and Tanganyika. This means you can select the right wood for almost every part of a model ship.

Wooden strips for hull planking

In classic wooden model shipbuilding, the hull is often constructed from individual planks which are laid over the frame structure and shaped to fit the hull’s form. Different types of wooden strips are used, particularly for double planking.

Softer woods that are easy to work with, such as lime, are ideal for underplanking or the first layer of planking. The strips are easy to cut, sand and shape to fit the curves of the hull.

For a visible second layer of planking, finely grained woods such as walnut, mahogany or sapele are often used. They give historical model ships a particularly high-quality and authentic wooden finish.

Deck planks for model ships

Narrow wooden strips also play an important role in the design of a model ship’s deck. With suitable deck planks, the typical plank structure of a ship’s deck can be reproduced to scale.

By cutting the strips to length and laying them in a staggered pattern, the plank joints of the original vessel can be reproduced. Caulking, plank nails and other details can also be recreated in high-quality historical model ships.

Walnut, pear wood and other woods for fine details

For visible components and fine work, woods with a uniform and fine grain are particularly sought after.

Walnut strips, for example, are ideal for visible planking, rubbing strakes, railings and decorative elements. Pear wood is popular in high-quality ship model making due to its fine texture, and is often used for particularly precise components and details.

Mahogany and sapele strips offer a warm, darker wood finish and are suitable for visible areas, superstructures and decorative panelling.

Round rods for masts, yards and spars

As well as rectangular strips, you will also find wooden round rods for model shipbuilding in this category. They are used, amongst other things, for masts, yards, spars, bowsprits and other round timbers.

Different diameters are available depending on the scale. Round rods can be tapered and individually adapted to the respective model ship.
