HMS Bounty Dinghy 1:24 – Wooden model kit by OcCre
The HMS Bounty dinghy by OcCre on a scale of 1:24 is a highly detailed wooden model kit and, at the same time, an interesting introduction to classic historical ship modelling. The large scale allows the structure, planking, interior fittings and rigging to be depicted particularly well.
The original vessel is one of the most famous boats in maritime history. Following the mutiny on the Bounty in 1789, William Bligh and 18 crew members who remained loyal to him were marooned in the open dinghy. Despite having extremely meagre supplies, they managed an extraordinary voyage of around 5,800 kilometres across the Pacific to Timor. It was this very small boat that thus became the setting for one of the most remarkable navigational feats of the 18th century.
Classic wooden ship model-making on a manageable scale
The kit is constructed using the traditional frame-building method. Laser-cut wooden parts form the basis for a precise assembly of the hull. The subsequent planking with wooden strips teaches fundamental techniques of historical ship model-making and makes the model particularly interesting for model-makers who wish to gain their first experience with a planked wooden hull.
The 1:24 scale offers a major advantage here: components and details are significantly larger than on many complete historical sailing ships. This makes it easy to carry out numerous tasks without the finished model taking up an excessive amount of space.
The interior of the open boat also remains fully visible. Benches, the floor, frames and other fittings contribute significantly to the model’s characteristic appearance and make the construction of the dinghy particularly vivid.
Detailed kit featuring wood, metal fittings and rigging
OcCre uses various types of wood and laser-cut wooden parts for the kit, as well as wooden strips for planking and interior fittings. The wooden construction is complemented by etched brass parts and cast metal components, which are used for fittings and other details.
The model also includes sails and rigging lines of varying thicknesses. This results in a varied model that combines classic woodwork with fittings, sails and a complete rigging system.
A display stand for the finished model is also included in the kit.
Recommended for those new to historical ship modelling
OcCre classifies the Bounty’s dinghy as a beginner’s model. With around 462 individual parts and an estimated build time of approximately 120 hours, the kit nevertheless offers a fully-fledged and varied model-building project.
The build teaches numerous fundamental techniques of historical ship modelling. These include constructing a frame structure, planking the hull, working and fitting wooden parts, attaching metal fittings, and assembling the sails and rigging.
Planking requires a little patience and meticulous work. However, thanks to the manageable size of the hull and the large scale, the model is ideally suited to familiarising oneself with these steps and gaining experience for more extensive historical ship models.
The Bounty dinghy from OcCre is therefore not only interesting because of its extraordinary history, but also as a compact and versatile wooden model kit for beginners and model-makers who wish to build a historical ship model with a clearly visible structure.
