Vanguard Models English brig HMS Speedy model ship kit 1:64
revised version 2023
History of the model:
This small brig was one of the first generation of new naval brigs, and her lines were more of a cross between a sleek cutter and a brig. She was a small ship for her class, but what she lacked in size and raw gun power, she more than made up for in character. The Speedy had a very eventful history: she was captured by French frigates in 1794 and recaptured in March of the following year. After Cochrane lost her (in an unwinnable battle), the Speedy was renamed Saint Pierre and presented to the Pope by Napoleon himself.
While commanding the Speedy, Cochrane made a name for himself. It was his first command, and the combination of this aggressive commander and the Speedy ensured that they were a thorn in the side of the French and Spanish naval forces, culminating in the remarkable feat of capturing the Spanish 32-gun frigate Gamo (with Xebec hull and rigging). Cochrane led 48 of his men (almost all of them) up the sides of the frigate, which was over 300 strong, and eventually captured the ship.
The kit in detail:
The 1:64 scale kit has been extensively researched and developed to show the ship as it probably looked in 1800/01 when it was commanded by Thomas Cochrane.
For those modellers who like to add detail beyond what the kits offer, the Speedy kit includes the lower deck, which is stepped aft and is at the correct height to the main deck. There are many more frames than standard kits of this size to maintain the very fine hull lines when planking.
- 16 sets of laser-cut materials, including a laser-cut and engraved deck
- 3 brass etching plates with the finest parts
- Copper planking for the hull below the waterline
- Double planking in lime wood and second planking in pear wood
- Walnut roundels for masts and yards
- 10 different sizes of black and natural rigging twine
- 14 4-pounder cannons and 20 half-pounder swivelling cannons made of resin casting
- Resin figure in 1:64 scale of Lord Cochrane himself
- 79-page, colour building instructions in German and 10 sheets of 50x70cm building plans
- Two boat stands, one for the construction and one clear acetate stand for the finished model
- Very detailed 18' cutter mini kit
- All other materials and accessories required to build the model as shown.
