Viking ship construction kit Drakkar from manufacturer Amati
History of the original:
The Drakkar, or ‘dragon ship’, was the symbol of Viking bravery. Christened ‘Ormen Lange’ (Long Serpent) by King Olaf Tryggvason, this impressive warship with a dragon's head figurehead could reach considerable lengths of up to 48 metres.
Its structure, protected by high sides and characterised by overlapping planks, ensured lightness and extreme manoeuvrability, which enabled it to navigate in difficult waters thanks to its double bow.
The construction of a Drakkar required craftsmanship and advanced nautical knowledge. Each ship was a masterpiece of engineering and design, with a light but sturdy structure that allowed it to navigate rough seas and tangled rivers. The sails, made of fine fabrics and dyed in bright colours, fluttered in the wind as the drakkar embarked on endless adventures that took the Vikings to distant lands and established settlements in remote areas.
Today, the Drakkar remains a symbol of the courage and determination of the Vikings. Their deeds influenced the culture and history of many nations and left an indelible mark on the world.
The Drakkar is an icon of the Viking Age, a reminder of the glorious past of a bold and adventurous people who sailed into the unknown with courageous hearts and great ambition.
The Oseberg ship find is one of the most significant archaeological finds from the Viking Age. The grave was discovered in 1904 in a mound near Tønsberg in Norway and dates from the early 9th century (around 820 AD).
Today, the Oseberg ship is a centrepiece of the exhibition at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo and is considered one of the best-preserved Viking ships in existence.
