Individual copper plates – embossed – for realistic hull planking in model making

These individually embossed copper plates enable particularly authentic reproduction of historical underwater planking in model making. The individual copper plates are flexible to handle and can be adapted to almost any hull shape. They can be cut to size, slightly bent or applied directly overlapping to reproduce the characteristic pattern true to the original. The assembly of many individual plates creates a particularly high-quality overall impression that is visually almost indistinguishable from the historical model.

Why copper plates were used on ship hulls

Historical wooden ships were planked with copper plates to protect their underwater hulls from two serious problems: the growth of algae, mussels and barnacles – which could significantly reduce speed – and shipworms, which severely damaged wooden hulls. Copper's natural properties made it both anti-fouling and pest-resistant. This allowed ships to remain fast, manoeuvrable and operational for longer. These embossed copper plates allow this historical principle to be realistically implemented in model making.
