Laser-cut imitation copper plate – scale 1:200

This laser-cut imitation copper plate in 1:200 scale allows model ships to be fitted with absolutely realistic copper planking. The plate is made of real copper, which has been precisely structured using laser technology so that the typical rectangular copper elements of historic ship hulls are reproduced in detail. This makes the material ideal for discerning model builders who attach particular importance to an authentic look – for example, in models such as the HMS Victory (800720).

Realistic appearance and easy to work with

Thanks to the fine laser engraving, the individual copper plates are clearly defined and give the hull a lively, historically accurate appearance. The copper plate can be easily cut into suitable strips with a knife or scissors and then flexibly adapted to the hull contour. Gluing them in place creates a clean, closed copper skin that is visually indistinguishable from the original ship's fittings.

Why copper plates were used on historic ship hulls

In the age of sailing ships, copper represented a revolutionary improvement in ship technology. The underwater hulls were covered with thin copper plates to solve several crucial problems:

Due to its natural properties, copper inhibited the growth of algae, mussels and barnacles, which could slow a ship down considerably. It also provided effective protection against shipworms, a wood-boring insect that could severely damage hulls. With copper plates, the underwater hull remained clean for longer, maintained its speed and needed to be docked less often. Warships such as HMS Victory benefited particularly from this, as it made them faster, more manoeuvrable and longer in service.
