Model ship HMS Supply on a scale of 1:50 by Artesania Latina in wood
History of the original
The HMS Supply was built in England in 1759. She was originally designed as an armed tender, which means that she was mainly used to support larger warships. Her sleek design and small size made her a fast and manoeuvrable ship, ideal for use in shallow coastal waters. HMS Supply is best known for her participation in the First Fleet, a fleet of eleven ships that set sail from England to Australia in May 1787. This expedition marked the beginning of European colonisation in Australia. The First Fleet transported around 1,500 people, including convicts, soldiers and crew members, to establish a new colony in Australia. After arriving in Australia, HMS Supply remained in the region and was of vital importance to the fledgling colony. She was used for numerous supply runs between the various settlements and Norfolk Island, which was also colonised in 1788. After several years in service to the colony, HMS Supply was eventually declared unfit for service. She was decommissioned and broken up in 1792. However, her name and role live on in history, particularly in relation to the founding of Australia.
HMS Supply is seen as a symbol of the determination and challenges faced by Australia's first European settlers. Her legacy is particularly emphasised in Australian history as she played a central role in the establishment of the first colony.
