Billing Boats HMS Warrior 1:100 scale model kit

Faithful replica of the ship that can be seen in Portsmouth today.

History of the original:

HMS Warrior, built in 1860, was the first iron-hulled armoured ship suitable for ocean-going. With the construction of HMS Warrior, the British responded to the aggressive shipbuilding programme of the French, which included the first ironclad, La Gloire, built by the brilliant designer Stanislas Charles Henri Dupuy de Lome.

Determined to meet this challenge adequately, the first Lord of the British Admiralty, Sir John Somerset Pakington, had a ship built that would be so far superior to the enemy in terms of quality, speed, size, armament and armour that it was completely out of the question for France to engage Britain in a naval conflict.
When HMS Warrior was commissioned on 1 August 1861 under the command of Captain Arthur Auckland Leopold Pedro Cochrane, she was the largest ship in the world and, with a displacement of 9,210 tonnes, a full 60% larger than La Gloire.
After the first test voyages were completed, the Warrior underwent minor modifications. In June 1862, the Warrior entered active service in the Channel Squadron, patrolling the coastal waters and sailing to Lisbon and Gibraltar.
The Warrior had triggered a true revolution in shipbuilding at the time. Faster ships with larger cannons and stronger armour followed as early as 1864. From 1871 onwards, no longer at the cutting edge, the Warrior was used for subordinate duties in coastal defence and in the naval reserve.

When it was discovered in May 1883 that the foremast and mainmast had considerable defects and repair was considered unprofitable, the Warrior was finally retired from naval service and in 1904 was assigned to a naval school under the name Vernon III.
She was released for scrapping and could not initially be sold in 1924 due to a lack of demand. In March 1929, she was taken to the Pembroke Naval Dockyard, where she was used as a floating oil depot under the name Oil Fuel Hulk C77.
In 1978, the Warrior was the last ship of the Black Battlefleet of 45 iron hulks built for the Royal Navy between 1861 and 1877.
