Model kit of the galleon Santa Maria from manufacturer Amati
History of the original:
The Santa María was Christopher Columbus' famous flagship on his first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492. A sturdy carrack measuring around 25 metres in length, it was the largest of the three ships and was provided by the experienced sailor Juan de la Cosa. Together with the two caravels Niña and Pinta, the Santa María set sail from Palos de la Frontera on 3 August 1492 and reached the island of Guanahani in the Bahamas on 12 October – an event that went down in history as the discovery of America. On 25 December of the same year, the Santa María was shipwrecked off the coast of Haiti, and its remains were used to build the fort ‘La Navidad’, the first Spanish settlement in the New World.
A Santa María model ship is now considered a classic for anyone interested in maritime history, historic sailing ships and the great voyages of discovery of the 15th century. With its detailed replica, striking square sails and authentic hull design, a model of the Santa María is a highlight for collectors, hobbyists and model building enthusiasts. Whether as a decorative display piece or part of a maritime collection, the Santa María ship model impressively conveys the fascination of seafaring in the time of Christopher Columbus.
