Stand model Mayflower kit from Billing Boats
Faithful model of an English three-masted galleon.
History of the original:
What the "Mayflower", the ship that brought the first English emigrants to America, looked like is completely unknown. It is also not known when and where she was built. The ship only appears in history around 1620.
The "Mayflower" left the port of Plymouth/England on 6 September 1620 with 102 men, women and children on board after initial difficulties at the start.
After 67 days at sea, the "Mayflower" dropped anchor on 11 November 1620 at what is now known as Provincetown Harbour, having arrived 200 miles further north than planned. The Pilgrims (Separatists and Puritans) decided to settle at this location. The "Mayflower" lay at anchor in the bay for 16 weeks, during which time half of the crew died. The return voyage was decided and on 6 May 1621 the "Mayflower" arrived in England unscathed after 31 days at sea. 3 years later, she is mentioned again in the records of the Maritime Office. Quote: "the ship "Mayflower" 128 pounds sterling, 8 shillings, 4 pence, in decay". Final survey in May 1624. In 1957 the "Mayflower II" was rebuilt in Brixham/Devon and sailed to America, where she was anchored forever off the "Plimoth Settlement" (landing place of the Pilgrims) as a gift to the American people.
