H.M.S. Greyhound

English frigate from 1720

The Greyhound, a remarkable 20-gun frigate, was built to Stacey's plans and launched at Deptford Dockyard on 13 February 1720. Little is known of her history on the seas, but it is reasonable to assume that the Greyhound was mainly deployed alongside other ships of similar design in the fight against the pirates who made the coasts of the Mediterranean unsafe at the time. However, the results in the fight against piracy were rather disappointing, as the extremely manoeuvrable pirate ships, usually equipped with 4-6 bow guns, were able to attack the more cumbersome frigates head-on and therefore usually had an easier time in the battles.
The period between 1600 and around 1700 marked the gradual end of this type of ship, which was characterised by two rows of oars below the gun batteries. The rudder positions could be occupied at any time in order to have sufficient manoeuvrability when manoeuvring at low speed or in calm conditions. Like many ships of the same era, the Greyhound had very elegant lines, was elaborate in every detail and yet decorated in a rather functional manner.

COREL's 1:100 scale replica is the result of extensive research based on old prints, books and other models on display in maritime museums. The extremely attractive model is representative of the historical era to which it belonged.
