Round deadeyes

Round deadeyes are characteristic fittings on historic sailing ships and are used in model shipbuilding to faithfully reproduce and secure the shrouds. They are also known as Juffern, Wantjungfern or, in English, deadeyes. The different names all refer to the same traditional rigging element.

A round deadeye usually has three holes and a circumferential groove. The shroud or a strope is securely looped around the deadeye in this groove. The taljereep, which connects an upper and a lower deadeye, is threaded through the holes. By alternately tensioning the taljereep, the shrouds of the original ship could be secured and retightened as required.

The lower ring was usually connected to the hull via a shackle or a chain, whilst the upper ring was attached to the shroud. Round rings thus function as historical precursors to modern shroud tensioners. Unlike a block, they do not have a rotating sheave.

Round block pulleys are particularly suitable for the rigging of historic sailing ships, schooners, cutters, frigates and other traditional model ships. They can be used as a functional rigging element or as a scale-accurate fitting detail, lending the model a particularly authentic appearance.

When selecting these, please take into account the outer diameter, the material thickness, the diameter of the boreholes and the scale of the model. To ensure the shrouds are fully tensioned, the round thimbles are usually used in pairs.
