LiFePo batteries are considered to be one of the safest lithium battery technologies. In contrast to LiPo batteries, they are not as sensitive to mechanical damage, overcharging or high temperatures. The risk of explosions or fires is significantly lower with LiFePo. Compared to NiMH batteries, they also offer greater thermal stability and do not leak if damaged.
LiFePo batteries have a very high cycle stability. While LiPo batteries usually lose capacity noticeably after 300 to 800 charging cycles and NiMH batteries last around 500 to 1000 cycles, LiFePo cells often achieve 2000 to 3000 cycles or more. This makes them more economical in the long term.
A major advantage of LiFePo is the stable voltage during the entire discharge process. This means that connected devices are constantly supplied with energy without the power dropping prematurely. With NiMH batteries, the voltage drops significantly under load. LiPo batteries also show a greater voltage loss under high loads.
LiFePo batteries do not require environmentally harmful or toxic materials such as cobalt. This makes them more environmentally friendly and easier to recycle than many other battery types. Although NiMH does not contain lithium, it does contain rare earths. LiPo batteries are more harmful to the environment due to the chemicals they contain and are more difficult to dispose of.
LiFePo cells work reliably even at high temperatures and are less susceptible to heat problems. LiPo batteries, on the other hand, are very sensitive to overheating and can even catch fire. NiMH lose performance significantly at high and especially at low temperatures.
LiFePo batteries have a very low self-discharge rate. They retain their charge almost constantly for months. NiMH batteries, on the other hand, discharge relatively quickly, even if they are not used. LiPo batteries lie between the two in this respect, but lose more energy than LiFePo.
