Servos for model boats and RC modelling

RC servos are used in model-making to precisely translate the control commands from your remote control into mechanical movement. In model boat building, for example, servos are used to control rudder systems, fire monitors, cranes, dinghies, hatches and numerous other special functions. Special sail winches are also available for sailing models.

In our range, you will find a wide selection of servos for model ships and RC modelling – from compact micro-servos and classic standard servos right through to high-performance digital and high-voltage servos with metal gearboxes.

RC servos for rudders and special functions in model ships

The classic application of a servo in a model ship is to operate the rudder. Depending on the size and speed of the model, as well as the size of the rudder surface, different actuating forces are required.

In functional model-making, servos can also be used for many other tasks, for example:

• rudder systems
• fire monitors
• cranes and jibs
• dinghy mounts
• movable guns and superstructures
• flaps and doors
• towing devices
• mechanical gear-shifting functions
• other special moving functions

For applications requiring a particularly large range of motion, you will also find 180° servos, which are suitable, for example, for special moving functions in model ships.

Standard, mini, micro and sub-micro servos

Depending on the available installation space, different servo sizes are available.

Standard servos are the classic solution for rudder systems and many special functions. They feature a robust design and are available in numerous power ratings.

Mini and micro servos are particularly suitable for smaller model ships or functions where installation space is limited. For very small models and particularly delicate applications, we also stock sub-micro and ultra-micro servos.

This allows you to select the servo to suit the model size, installation space and required actuating force.

Digital and analogue servos

In our range, you will find both analogue servos and digital servos.

Analogue servos are tried-and-tested, cost-effective solutions for many classic control tasks. Digital servos enable particularly precise control and rapid response, and are therefore frequently used in more demanding applications.

The range includes servos with different motor and gearbox designs – right up to high-performance coreless and brushless servos.

High-voltage servos for high performance

Numerous models in our range are designed as HV servos – High Voltage Servos –. Depending on the servo, these can be operated at higher operating voltages, thereby achieving high actuating forces and short response times.

When selecting a servo, the permissible operating voltage must be taken into account and matched to the receiver, BEC and power supply.

Servos with metal gearboxes and ball bearings

For functions subject to heavier loads, a servo with a robust metal gearbox (MG) is often recommended. Metal gearboxes offer high load-bearing capacity and are particularly suitable for rudder systems on larger models and special functions subject to mechanical stress.

Many of the servos on offer also feature ball bearings (BB – Ball Bearing) on the output shaft. These ensure precise alignment and reduce mechanical play and wear.

For particularly demanding applications, you will also find high-performance digital servos with steel gearboxes, aluminium housings and brushless motors.

Water-resistant servos for model boats

Moisture cannot always be completely avoided in a model boat. That is why we also stock water-resistant or waterproof servos in various power ratings.

These models are particularly suitable for RC boats and functional vessels, where splash water or moisture place increased demands on the RC components used.

However, a water-resistant servo is no substitute for careful installation of the RC electronics in the model, ensuring they remain as dry as possible.

Servos with high actuating force

The required actuating force of a servo depends heavily on the specific application. For light special functions or small models, even small servos may be sufficient. Large rudder systems, heavy mechanisms or functions under heavy load, on the other hand, require significantly higher actuating forces.

Our range extends from small micro-servos to high-torque servos with very high actuating forces. This means you will find a suitable solution for both delicate functions and large, heavy RC models.

Sail winches for RC sailing boats and model sailing ships

Special sail winch servos are used for sail adjustment on RC sailing boats and model sailing ships. Unlike a standard rudder servo, these can cover a much greater travel distance over several revolutions, thereby winding sheets onto and off a winch drum.

In our range, you’ll find various sail winches for different model sizes and requirements – from compact Windforce models right through to high-performance digital and high-voltage sail winches.

Some models feature metal gearboxes, ball-bearing output shafts or guided winch drums. A closed or guided winch drum can help to guide the sheet securely around the drum.

Which servo do I need for my model boat?

When selecting the right model-making servo, the key factors are actuating force, servo size, travel and operating voltage.

For a standard rudder in a small or medium-sized model boat, a standard servo is often sufficient. Large and fast models, or large rudder surfaces, on the other hand, may require a significantly more powerful servo.

For special functions, the required travel should also be taken into account. For particularly large movements, for example, servos with 120°, 140° or 180° travel as well as sail winches with multiple drum revolutions are available.

In confined spaces, mini, micro and sub-micro servos offer a compact alternative.
